Medical Clinic

The coordinator of the ONG, ICAmigos, along with a general practitioner is in charge of this project. It has the fundamental resources and equipment to provide services to those in and around the Quetzaltenango community.

The medical clinic consists of one modest room with a small area for medicine and offers the practice of general medicine to the surrounding community. When available, medicine is prescribed and given to patients by the doctor at no cost.

Financial help from ICAmigos includes paying the salary of the doctor and purchasing medicine. ICAmigos also solicits the help and support of foreign volunteers who are students or graduates in the medical field.

We are convinced that prevention is the best cure, so we also place a strong emphasis on organizing healthcare programs. The main objectives of this project are to help the community achieve a higher quality of life by providing basic, but efficient services to those who are most vulnerable: women and children; not forgetting about men, of course.

The clinic is located in the city of Quetzaltenango, inside of the school. The majority of the patients who come to the clinic are indigenous. A high percentage of the patients are also illiterate with very limited economic resources.

Achievements:

  1. ICAmigos found the appropriate facilities and location for the medical clinic.
  2. The doctor comes to the clinic five days a week, in contrast to just once or twice a week, as is the case in many clinics.
  3. ICAmigos has obtained medical supplies and instruments for the clinic.
  4. Campaigns to give out vitamins, parasite medication and fluoride have contributed to improving the health of the community and the population in general.
  5. Many student volunteers and volunteers in the medical field have donated their time and money to help out in the clinic.

If you are interested in community health care or are a health care professional, come volunteer at the clinic!
