a community of the Mayan Weaving Artisans of the ICAmigos Project..

First Sunday of the month:

Artisan’s Market in the Central Park, with sales and demonstrations of their work by various Guatemalan artisans.

Visit to the Fuentes Georginas, to swim and bathe in naturally heated mineral water that descends from a volcano. This is one of the most beautiful natural spots in Quetzaltanango. You can walk through the cloud forest at the mountaintop if you wish.

Visit to the town of Salcajá to see the process of making traditional Mayan clothing. In addition see the first Catholic church founded in Central America. Also try Salcajá’s signature alcoholic beverage: "Caldo de Frutas" ("Fruit Broth")

We will meet at ICA to visit a professional Dance Studio for Salsa and Merengue lessons.

Visit to the Rural School for Children of San José la Viña community, to know how is the process of Guatemalan education and the circumstances of living of the children. Most of them come from Indigenous families.

Visit to Lake Atitlán!
Take a tour of the lake and visit some of the interesting towns that surround it. We will spend the night in Panajachel.

Leave Panajachel and travel to Chichicastenango, to tour the most popular outdoor market in Guatemala..

One-hour walk in the mountains to visit the natural sauna "Los Vahos". The steam comes directly from a volcano, and has medicinal properties due to its mineral content.

Visit the town of Zunil to tour a weavers’ cooperative, the church and meet San Simon (Saint Simon), and learn about the Mayan cosmovision.

Visit to the Quetzaltenango Women’s Prison, to see and learn about the conditions of Guatemalan jails, talk with inmates and give them a little support and distraction.

Visit the Reforestation Project, tour the nursery, help care for the saplings or work in the mountains. This project runs all year. Volunteer work opportunities are available.

Visit to the hand blown glass factory COPAVIC to see and learn about the process of glass blowing and the products made by this cooperative. There will be opportunities to buy the products and learn about the businesses involved in the glass blowing industry. .

Visit to the town of Momostenango
, where we will visit a home to see the process of making woolen blankets, a cottage industry. Also see the beautiful natural rock formations, tour the town and visit its outdoor market

Demonstration of the Salsa and Merengue rhythms and dance lessons. The teachers have extensive experience teaching dance.

Visit to a coffee plantation to learn about how coffee is grown and processed, as well as the living conditions of the workers. Later we will visit a lovely black sand beach and enjoy a swim in the Pacific Ocean, and great food and beverages.

Climb the Chicabal volcano and see Lake Chicabal, located in a crater at the top of the volcano. The area around the lake is a Mayan sanctuary, where religious ceremonies are held regularly. The volcano is located in the town of San Martín, a one-hour bus ride followed by a two-hour hike up the volcano..
           

Notes:
*Every Friday morning there is an optional visit to San Francisco el Alto’s outdoor market, one of the largest in existence.
*Two Wednesdays per month there is a visit by the four groups of Weaving Artisans of our social project for exposition and sale of their products.
*We have about 100 films and documentaries on various political, social and cultural topics related to Guatemala and other countries. Students can request the list of and view these videos during class or free time.
